Before the Wedding: A Film Bridal Session on a Family Property in the Coastal Carolinas

filed in:

As a Wilmington NC wedding photographer I’ve learned pretty quickly that how someone moves through a bridal session tells you a lot about how they’re going to move through their wedding day, and Harper just had this ease about her from the moment we started. No nerves. No performing. Just her, in her dress, on the land her future husband’s family has loved for years.

We were under oak trees the whole afternoon. Spanish moss everywhere. The light was overcast and soft and honestly really good for film. At one point she walked out onto the dock and just stood there looking out at the river and I didn’t say anything. I just let it happen.

Those are always the ones.

Shooting on the property where she’d get married weeks later

The thing that made this session feel different was that this wasn’t just a pretty location we chose. This was the actual backyard where Harper and Matthew were getting married. The same oaks. The same dock. The same river in the background.

She already knew every inch of it. And it showed. There’s a version of a bridal session that feels like a photoshoot, and then there’s this, where someone is just existing somewhere they love and you happen to be there with a camera. I’ll take the second one every time.

If you’ve ever wondered what it actually feels like to work together, this is a pretty honest preview of it.

Kodak T-Max, Polaroids, and why this day called for black and white

I loaded Kodak T-Max for the film portion and I’m really glad I did. Black and white was the right call. The moss, the trees, that full satin skirt against all of it. Color would have been beautiful too but there was something about stripping it back that felt true to the mood of the afternoon.

We shot Polaroids throughout as well. I bring them to almost every bridal session because there’s something about handing someone a physical print of themselves in their dress, still developing in their hand, that makes it all feel real in a way a phone screen just doesn’t.

For anyone curious about what hybrid film photography looks like in practice, this session is a good example of how I mix formats depending on what the moment is asking for.

The dress, the bouquet, the in between moments

Harper wore this satin ball gown with a lace bodysuit underneath and it was such a good combination. Classic and full and romantic but the lace gave it something a little more unexpected. It moved really well in the breeze off the river. Her bouquet was by That Petal Babe, who also did her wedding florals a few weeks later, and it was exactly right for the afternoon.

The property did a lot of the work honestly. Those oaks are enormous. The moss hangs down in these long curtains. The dock looks out over open water with nothing between you and the horizon. It’s the kind of place that photographs itself if you just get out of the way.

And knowing that a few weeks later she was going to stand in that same backyard and say her vows to Matthew, with all their people around them. I don’t know. It made every frame feel like it meant something.

Harper’s wedding happened on that same property a few weeks later and I got to be there for it too. Already knowing the land, already knowing her. It made a difference.

If you want someone who’s going to pay attention to the real stuff, I’d love to hear about your day.

To me photography has never really been about how a moment looked. It's always been about how it felt to be there. Inspired by nostalgia, human connection, and the quiet in between moments that most people miss, I shoot on digital, 35mm film, and Polaroids to create something that feels timeless, warm, and entirely yours.
