As a Bald Head Island proposal photographer, I love a good secret, and this one took weeks of planning between me and Caedmon before Raquel ever touched down in North Carolina.
Caedmon and Raquel met years ago at Texas Christian University, and they just graduated. Caed’s path led him to North Carolina to play baseball, while Raquel stayed rooted in Texas. So when he invited her out for a few days at the beach, it read exactly like what it looked like on paper, a trip to see him before real life gets busy.
What Raquel didn’t know is that Caed had been planning to propose on that very trip, at the beach, exactly the way she’d always pictured it. The whole thing had been mapped out for weeks, ferry schedules, golf cart routes, a lighthouse, and me.
Planning a Bald Head Island proposal in total secrecy
Caed and I started talking weeks before the trip. We scouted timing around the ferry to Bald Head Island, worked out how to get a golf cart to the right stretch of beach without Raquel catching on, and built in enough buffer that nothing would feel rushed or obvious. As a Bald Head Island proposal photographer, half the job on a day like this isn’t photography at all. It’s logistics, timing, and a lot of trust.
Most of our communication happened in short bursts. Caed would duck into a bathroom to call me with an update, and I’d be somewhere close by, trying to keep straight faces easy in case Raquel glanced our way. We adjusted the plan more than once. Ferries run on their own schedule, and golf carts are slower than they look when you’re racing a sunset.
The proposal at sunset
By the time we made it to the right spot, the light was doing exactly what we’d hoped for. Soft, gold, low on the water. Caed got down on one knee, and Raquel’s hands went straight to her face the way they do in every proposal video you’ve ever cried at, except this one was real and it was happening a few feet in front of me.
Raquel never suspected a thing. She thought this was just a beach vacation with her boyfriend before the real world set in post grad. Instead she got a ring, a sunset, and a photographer who’d spent weeks helping Caed pull off the surprise of her life.
Portraits at Old Baldy
We finished the session at Old Baldy, the historic lighthouse that’s been standing watch over Bald Head Island since 1817. It felt right to end there. Something about a landmark that old, that steady, standing behind two people just starting their own story together.
I shot this session the way I shoot most of my work, a mix of digital and 35mm film. There’s something about film that slows a moment down, and after weeks of secret phone calls and fast golf cart rides, slowing down felt like the whole point. Why Bald Head Island is worth the ferry ride
Bald Head Island isn’t the easiest place to pull off a surprise. There’s a ferry involved, a limited run of golf carts, and exactly one direction news can travel on an island that small. But that’s part of what makes it such a good setting for a proposal. Everyone slows down a little when they can’t just hop in a car and leave.
I’m based in Wilmington, North Carolina, just a short drive and a ferry ride from Bald Head Island, and this stretch of coast is where most of my work happens. Instead he called me from bathrooms, chased ferry schedules, and got down on one knee in front of a perfect sunset while Raquel had no idea any of it was coming. That’s the kind of love I like photographing best, the kind that plans ahead and still manages to feel like a surprise.
