As a Wilmington maternity photographer, one of my favorite things about shooting on this coast is the light at Wrightsville Beach right before the sun goes down. Not the big golden moment everyone chases. Just quiet and soft and easy to work in. That’s exactly what we got the evening I spent with Haley and Jake.

They’re expecting their first this summer. This session was never about getting a perfect shot. It was about slowing down for an hour and actually being in the moment they’re living right now, because that moment goes fast.

Not your typical golden hour beach session

The classic golden hour beach maternity session is beautiful and also not really what I do. We shot right at sunset but leaned into the cooler, softer light that comes in those last few minutes before the sky changes. Nothing harsh. Nothing that needed fixing. The images feel calm and real because of it, which is exactly where I want to land.

We were going for something a little bit vintage J.Crew — easy, classic, the kind of styling that doesn’t try too hard and photographs better for it. Think relaxed linen, simple silhouettes, nothing that pulls your eye away from the people wearing it. It worked really well against the muted tones of the beach at that hour, and it’s the kind of look I’d encourage any expecting couple to consider for a Wilmington maternity session.

Casual, intimate, and completely them

Some of my favorite sessions are the ones where I give a couple a loose prompt and then disappear. Walk toward the water. Just stand there. And then I shut up and let them be.

That’s what this was. Haley and Jake are comfortable with each other in a way that photographs really well. There was a lot of laughing, a lot of quiet, Jake’s hand on her shoulder. Those are the frames I care about. The ones where nobody is performing for the camera anymore.
