Why Incorporating Your Favorite Activity Makes Your Couples Session More Real

filed in:

As a Wilmington couples photographer, one of my favorite things is helping couples create sessions that feel completely authentic to them.

There’s something magical about a sunrise in Wilmington. The soft pink light over the ocean, the hush of the waves, the world just beginning to wake up. For this couple’s session, that magic was amplified by two people who felt completely at home in the water, because surfing is something they love doing together.

Instead of feeling like a photo shoot, their session felt like a morning ritual: boards tucked under their arms, salty air in their lungs, laughter spilling into the ocean as the sun broke over the horizon. It wasn’t about staging perfect poses; it was about capturing the rhythm of their relationship in a place where they felt most alive.

Why Activities Make Sessions Feel Authentic

If there’s one thing I hear from couples again and again, it’s this: “We’re not sure what to do in front of the camera.” And I get it. Being photographed can feel a little intimidating, especially if you’re not used to it.

That’s why, as a Wilmington couples photographer, I always encourage my clients to think about what feels most like them when planning their session. When you incorporate an activity you already love; surfing, hiking, cooking together, reading in a coffee shop, suddenly, the focus shifts. Instead of trying to “perform” for the camera, you’re doing something natural, something you’ve done a hundred times before.

The result?

  • You instantly feel more comfortable.
  • You have something to do with your hands (no more wondering where to put them!).
  • Your personalities shine through effortlessly.
  • The photos tell a story of who you really are, not a version of yourselves created just for the session.

It’s not about creating a perfect image. It’s about creating an experience that feels grounded, meaningful, and true to you.

A Wilmington Sunrise Surf Session

This sunrise session on Wrightsville Beach, just outside Wilmington, NC, was the perfect example. The couple both surf regularly, so when we started dreaming up their shoot, it just made sense: why not bring their boards and let the ocean be part of their story?

We met before dawn, when the beach was quiet and the air still carried that dreamy morning calm. As the sun began to rise, they carried their boards down to the shoreline, stopping to laugh and kiss in the golden light. The water reflected every soft pink and orange hue, wrapping them in a glow that felt both cinematic and intimate.

What I loved most was how natural it all felt. They weren’t worried about “posing” or “smiling the right way.” They were just being themselves, playful splashes in the water, quiet moments of connection as they floated side by side, the kind of easy rhythm that only comes from years of shared love and shared rituals.

Their photos are beautiful, yes. But more importantly, they’re theirs. They tell the story of two people who feel at home in the waves, who find joy in the salt and sunrise, who built their session around something deeply authentic to them.

Why This Matters for Your Own Session

You don’t have to be surfers to bring this same sense of authenticity to your photos. The key is asking: What feels like us?

Maybe it’s:

  • Sharing a slow morning coffee in your kitchen.
  • Wandering through downtown Wilmington, stopping at your favorite bar or bookstore.
  • Hiking one of your go-to trails and watching the sun set from the top.
  • Making pizza together at home, dancing in the kitchen between flour-dusted hands.
  • Or yes — chasing waves on Wrightsville Beach.

Whatever it is, when you choose to center your session around something you already love, you give yourself the gift of ease. Instead of worrying about what to do, you just do what comes naturally. The camera becomes a witness, not a spotlight.

And here’s the thing: years from now, when you look back on these photos, you won’t just see how you looked. You’ll remember how it felt. The way your coffee smelled. The warmth of the sand. The way your partner laughed as you tried not to get soaked by the waves. Those tiny, fleeting details are what make your photos timeless.

Why I Love Being a Wilmington Couples Photographer

One of the things I love most about working as a photographer in Wilmington is the variety this city offers. You can catch a sunrise surf at Wrightsville Beach, wander the historic streets of downtown, or sneak away to a hidden nature trail just outside the city.

The beauty of Wilmington is that it gives you endless ways to shape your session into something that feels personal. Whether you’re drawn to the coast, the city, or somewhere in between, we can find a backdrop that feels like home.

And that’s what I love most about my work here: no two sessions ever look the same, because no two couples ever are the same.

Ready to Dream Up Your Own Session?

At the end of the day, your couples session doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. It’s not about following trends or checking boxes — it’s about creating space to connect, to play, to remember what you love most about each other.

So whether that means chasing waves at sunrise, making breakfast together at home, or wandering Wilmington’s hidden corners, let’s create something that feels real. Something that’s yours.
